JR Pass(es) Maps, only for JR East and JR West

If you're still confused whether you should buy a JR Pass to go around Japan on you holiday, you're not alone. Many first timers to Japan only know about the nationwide JR Pass that cost quite a lot. BUT, if you only travel to certain areas, there's some train passes that's cheaper and maybe more suited to your trip. This time we will only cover the passes for the main island of Japan that is served by 2 companies, JR East Trains and JR West Trains.






Recommended for travelling from Tokyo to Nagano, Niigata and Nikko

Recommended for traveling between Tokyo and Sapporo. But the shinkansen only reached Hakodate for now (Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station), so you'll have to continue with a limited express train to Sapporo.

Recommended for traveling from Tokyo to Aomori, Sendai and Nikko.
You can explore the Tohoku area with this pass, such as Yamagata or Akita.

Recommended for travelling between Tokyo and Osaka thru Hokuriku Area.
A good pass if you'd like to visit Shirakawago, Takayama, or Toyama.


Recommended for travelling between the Tohoku region and Sapporo. Riding the shinkansen only valid between Shin-Shirakawa station in Fukushima and Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto station in Hakodate

Recommended for travelling from Tokyo to the surrounding area like Mt. Fuji, Izu, Karuizawa and Gala Yuzawa

This is the nationwide JR Pass that you can use on all JR Trains across Japan.
